Philly ranks 6th in the nation for monthly household bills. Here are the biggest expenses

Philadelphians have one of the highest monthly household expenses in the country, according to a report released Tuesday.

Data from doxo, an online bill payment company, found the average monthly bill in the Philadelphia region is $1,062, the sixth highest among the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the nation. The average household bill in the U.S. is $984, the report found.

The report relied on anonymized data from doxo’s 2.5 million customers paying more than 45,000 billers. The average monthly bills included costs from utilities, cable, mobile phone, auto loans, auto insurance, life insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, and home security.

Philadelphians are spending about 19 percent of their incomes on these expenses. Housing costs such as rent and mortgage were excluded. When adjusting for household income, Philadelphia’s average monthly bill was 2 percent above the U.S. average, the report found.

Driving the cost in Philly is health insurance bills which average $194 per month. That is $58 more per month, or 43 percent higher, than the average health insurance bill across the top 25 metros, according to doxo.

Health insurance aside, Philadelphia’s monthly bills were “not drastically higher" than those in other major cities, said Jim Kreyenhagen, doxo’s vice president of marketing and consumer services.

“They’re a little bit higher in almost every category except for the smaller categories,” he said.

For example, Philadelphia has some of the cheapest dental insurance, with area residents paying $31 per month — $4 less per month than the U.S. average.

Philadelphians also paid less for auto loans, with an average bill of $335 per month compared to the U.S. average of $376, the report found.

Miami ranked as the most expensive city for recurring household expenses with an average bill of $1,157, the report found. Charlotte was the most affordable among the top 25 metros, with residents there paying $869 per month for the same services.

Based in Seattle, doxo allows users to pay their bills with any bank or credit card through a single online account.
