Temple has added one player on signing day for football, Mahmud Dioubate, who was recruited as an athlete and is the brother of junior defensive tackle Karamo Dioubate.

Mahmud Dioubate is a 2018 graduate of Philadelphia’s John Bartram High, where he played quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder is likely to play defense, somewhere in the back seven, according to a person familiar with Temple’s recruiting.

"We are excited to add Mahmud to the Class of 2019,” head coach Rod Carey said in a statement released by the school. “He is a very talented athlete who we know will see the field for us.”

The Owls had few available spots and were able to keep 16 of the 17 players who signed in the early period from Dec. 19-21. The only one who won’t attend Temple is linebacker Mohamad Kamara, a linebacker from New Jersey’s Newark Central.

Mahmud Dioubate most recently attended Garden City (Kan.) Community College, and the Owls were still determining whether he has three or four years of eligibility.

Among the Owls' newcomers is running back Onasis Neeley, who counts as part of the 2018 recruiting class but just enrolled in January. The other newcomers who have enrolled in January are quarterback Kennique Bonner Steward, running back Re’Mahn Davis, defensive back M.J. Griffin, linebacker Yvandy Rigby, and offensive lineman Victor Stoffel.

Also enrolled is defensive back Harrison Hand, who transferred from Baylor and has two years of eligibility remaining. One additional incoming freshman is Tayvon Ruley, a walk-on from Penn Wood and Valley Forge Military Academy.

This has been a difficult recruiting time for Temple and, considering the circumstances, the Owls held up well. After head coach Geoff Collins resigned in December to take the Georgia Tech job, he was replaced by Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Diaz lasted just 18 days, before returning to Miami to become the head coach. Carey, the head coach the previous six seasons at Northern Illinois, was named Temple’s coach on Jan. 11.

“Without many scholarships available, we had two goals in mind during this signing period,” Carey said. "The first was to confirm the commitment of the very talented student-athletes who signed their NLIs in December. The second was to forge strong relationships with the high school coaches in Temple’s recruiting footprint. I feel very good with what we were able to accomplish.”
