Man facing retrial in officer shooting offered plea deal

A man whose conviction in the shooting of a Philadelphia police officer was overturned has 10 days to decide whether to take a plea deal or face retrial

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man whose conviction in the shooting of a Philadelphia police officer was overturned has 10 days to decide whether to take a plea deal or face retrial.

Thirty-seven-year-old Eric Torres was convicted in 2015 of aggravated assault and gun and drug charges and sentenced to 66 to 132 years. Jurors acquitted him of attempted murder. The Pennsylvania Superior Court ordered a new trial, saying police hadn't had probable cause to search his home after the August 2013 shooting.

Radio station KYW reports that prosecutors have offered Torres a sentence of 21 to 42 years, which would mean an aggregate 37- to 74-year term due to a probation violation.

Torres was convicted of shooting Officer Ed Davies during a struggle inside a corner store. Davies survived but underwent multiple surgeries.
