Saturday’s Southeastern Pa. roundup: Neumann-Goretti and La Salle track and field win Philadelphia Catholic League titles

Neumann-Goretti won the Philadelphia Catholic League Girls’ Track & Field Championship, while La Salle took the boys’ title for the fifth consecutive year on Saturday at Cardinal O’Hara.

Mykala Perry won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes to make it her second straight year of three individual victories, helping lead the Saints to 145 total points, 49 more than second-place Archbishop Ryan. Derek Beavers, Tommy Christie, Paul Ghantous and Vincent Twomey all won individual titles for the Explorers, who scored 113 more points than second-place St. Joseph’s Prep.

The Germantown Academy girls’ track and field team took first place at the Inter-Ac championships, while Haverford finished first for the boys. Isabelle Goldstein won the 3,200, 1,600 and 800-meter events for the Patriots.

Friends’ Central girls’ track and field won the Friends Schools League championships for the fourth consecutive year, as Westtown School placed first for the boys.

Cianan Gamble’s walk-off solo home run in the seventh inning gave Westtown a 6-5 win over Germantown Friends in the Friends Schools League semifinals, sending the Moose to their first title game since 1997. Gamble went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Ewen Donald, Jake Diaz and Dylan Grim each had RBI singles for the Moose. Noah Davidson’s three-run double in the fourth inning put Germantown Friends ahead, 5-2, before Westtown tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Westtown will play Shipley in the final on Tuesday with the chance to win its first championship since 1996.

In the other Friends School League semifinal, Shipley downed Friends’ Central, 3-0, to advance to its fifth straight title game. Dillon Bevan pitched a complete-game, allowing just three hits and striking out six. The Gators have been in the postseason 11 times since joining the league in the 2005-2006 season and have won the last four championships.

George School scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to beat Abington Friends, 4-2. Justus Agosto’s two-run home run in the top of the sixth scored the game’s first runs before Kyle Conner tied things with a two-run single in the bottom frame. Aidan Sheehan’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh provided the difference for the Cougars.

Paul Guensch’s 3-for-5 day led Father Judge over Springside Chestnut Hill, 10-3. Guensch had three RBIs, as did teammate Jeff Duda who went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks. Colin Kelly had two hits including a double for the Crusaders.

Malvern Prep shut out Penncrest, 13-0. Connor Offshack had a three-run blast, while teammate Lonnie White had a two-run shot.

Colin Schumm threw a complete-game shutout in Penn Charter’s 5-0 win over Archbishop Carroll.

La Salle jumped out to a 4-2 lead through two innings and beat Wissahickon, 5-4. Owen Lawn had a two-run home run for the Explorers.

St. Joseph’s Prep fell to Caravel (Del.), 5-0.

Hill School beat Blair Academy (NJ), 6-3.

Haverford High lost to Ocean City, 10-3.

Penn Charter remains undefeated in the Inter-Ac League after beating Notre Dame, 7-3. Abby Manion had a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, as both Anastasia Lewis and Abbey Quinn went 3-for-4 on the day. Lewis also picked up the save for the Quakers.

Cori Jones had a home run in Conwell-Egan’s 11-1 win over Pennsbury. The Eagles scored six runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Bensalem beat Council Rock South, 7-3.

Academy of New Church won its sixth straight Friends School League title with a 14-11 win over Shipley.

Friends’ Central beat George School, 19-9, in the Quaker Cup Final. The tournament is for teams that finish outside of Friends School League playoff contention. George School finished the season 6-9 after starting 0-8.
