A 41-year-old man was found fatally shot on a SEPTA train early Monday in Kensington, police said.

The man — identified by police Tuesday as Nicholas Troxell of the 2000 block of East Firth Street in Kensington — was aboard a Market-Frankford Line train when he was shot once in the head about 12:35 a.m., police said.

The westbound train stopped at the Allegheny station, where the man was removed and taken to Temple University Hospital, SEPTA spokesperson John Golden said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly afterward, Philadelphia Police said.

About 12 hours later in North Philadelphia, a 22-year-old man was shot in the neck, back, and abdomen near Boston Street and Park Avenue. He was pronounced dead a half-hour later at Temple. Police on Tuesday identified him as Omar Diante Jenkins, who lived nearby on the 2400 block of North Clarion Street.

Police reported no arrests in either case, and investigations were ongoing. It was too early to determine whether the shootings were related, police said.

Homicides have been on the rise in the city, with 93 killings reported by the end of Sunday, a 21% increase compared with the same period last year. The last time homicides were higher for the period was in 2007, when 96 were tallied.

SEPTA has curtailed its overnight service on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines, no longer operating trains between 1 and 4:30 a.m. to allow time for additional cleaning because of the coronavirus pandemic.
