Kenney not planning to meet with Trump during Philadelphia visit

Mayor Kenney does not plan to meet with President Trump while he is in Philadelphia Thursday for the Republican congressional delegation’s annual retreat, his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Mayor Kenney does not plan to meet with President Trump while he is in Philadelphia Thursday for the Republican congressional delegation's annual retreat, his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Kenney spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said the mayor did not request a sit down with the president because it is his understanding that Trump's time in the city will be brief. Hitt said Kenney did request a meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan but that one had not yet been scheduled. She said the mayor had no formal agenda and called it "just a courtesy since he's coming to the city."

"We understand that this is a busy working trip for them and so there may not be time," Hitt said.

Though brief, Trump's visit is expected to cause a major impact in Center City. The retreat is being held at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel at 12th and Market Streets. City officials have said the surrounding streets will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. until at least 6 p.m. Thursday.

"We ask people to express their First Amendment rights in the proper way, and don't damage property or hurt anyone else or themselves or don't get arrested," Kenney said Wednesday.
