Cold Mountain, the opera hatched in Philadelphia, won Best World Premiere in the International Opera Awards in London Sunday night at the Savoy Theatre. Among those cited were composer Jennifer Higdon, librettist Gene Scheer, and co-commissioner Santa Fe Opera. The piece was also co-commissioned by Opera Philadelphia and the Minnesota Opera, workshopped at the Curtis Institute of Music, and given its East Coast premiere by Opera Philadelphia at the Academy of Music in February. Opera Philadelphia director David B. Devan said Monday that Cold Mountain stood out because “it’s a good piece,” and audience reaction was so positive. “And having such a noted American composer doing her first opera was probably of interest to the jury,” he said. “The fact that the producing companies have a great history of supporting new work – I think that was part of what was being rewarded as well.” In fact, Higdon and Opera Philadelphia have another opera in the works, Devan said. No subject has been chosen, but it is a chamber opera to be premiered in 2020.
