Delco's 2SP Brewing strikes gold at 2016 Great American Beer Festival

Nine beers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey won medals at the national contest.

Upstart 2SP Brewing Co. of Aston, Delaware County, brought home gold and bronze medals over the weekend from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

Brewer Bob Barrar's The Russian, an imperial stout, was judged best among 91 entries in the category. The beer was rated No. 2 earlier this year at The Inquirer's annual Brew-vitational local-beer contest. Columnist Craig LaBan said the judges found it "richly malted and complex, with notes of molasses, licorice, and coffee, and a 'durable head and full body' that some found 'a bit hefty.' Another called it 'yummy but geeky.'"

Barrar won a bronze for Antonym among 27 entries in the Belgian- and French-Style Ale category.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. in Croydon won bronzes for Croydon Is Burning, a smoke beer, and Churchville Lager, a Vienna-Style Lager.

Flying Fish Brewing Co. in Somerdale won a silver in the Extra Special Bitter category for Red Fish, and a bronze in the Classic English-Style Pale Ale category for HopFish IPA.

Two Rivers Brewing Co. in Easton won gold for Six Finger Sam Saison, a specialty saison.

Yards Brewing Co. in Philadelphia won silver in the Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout category for Love Stout.

Iron Hill Brewery's Phoenixville location won a bronze for Bridge Street Bock, in the bock category.
