Classic Cake to rise in Center City with bakery and all-day cafe
Classic's 83-foot frontage on JFK Boulevard will have large windows to allow the public to watch Classic's gelato, chocolate, and candymaking.
Classic Cake — one of the region's largest bakers — plans to set up its flagship location next spring in Center City, as it's taking a ground-floor space at One Penn Center at Suburban Station (1617 JFK Blvd.), which years ago was a Marathon Grill location.
Owner Barry Kratchman said that in addition to a bakery selling cakes and pastries, Classic will operate a 40-seat restaurant open from breakfast time through dinner with a cafe menu and will offer takeout and a stand-up coffee bar serving products from Illycaffè.
Classic's 83-foot frontage on JFK Boulevard will have large windows to allow the public to watch Classic's gelato, chocolate, and candymaking. Robert Bennett, Classic's culinary director, is intimately familiar with Center City from his years at Le Bec-Fin during its glory days.
Classic operates a retail location in Cherry Hill as well as a commercial bakery in Port Richmond. It was founded in 1982 in Audubon, N.J., by Carol Neulander, Judy Stern, and Lynn Rothenberg but changed hands several times over the years.
Josh Weiss of MSC Retail represented the landlord, while Vincent Stipo of MSC represented Classic.
