Brothers Philippe and Michel Fadel have pulled the plug on the Jenkintown location of Mirna's Cafe, the Mediterranean BYOB they opened in summer 1992 on Old York Road.

Their location in Village Square in Blue Bell, which opened in 2001, is still going strong, Michel Fadel told me.

Business in Jenkintown was good, Fadel said, "but there's no parking. The township could make changes like [other towns] have done in places like Ambler. [Mirna's] is an old concept but it's still working." The restaurant has been closed for several weeks; the decision to shut down was recent.

Back in 1992 — when Mirna's 16 tables would be crushed with patrons enjoying the signature Mirna's soup (a seafood stock with shrimp, plum tomatoes, diced potatoes, spinach leaves, and basil) — dining competition in the immediate area was far less keen. "There are too many restaurants over there," Fadel said.

The brothers also own Vintage Bar & Grill up the road in Abington.

They expect to make a final decision on the property in February or March — sell or open with another concept.
