The Institute plans to move up, a block away

As its 10th anniversary approaches, The Institute — the craft-beer-and-whiskey bar that holds down the corner of 12th and Green — plans to move one block away.

Owner Charlie Collazo says he has obtained a lease at the century-old Independence Press Building (525 N. 11th St.), now being renovated for apartments. He expects the move in late April or early May 2018, with no interruption. The current building will be sold, he said.

Collazo and his wife, Heather, are longtime residents of the up-and-coming neighborhood, which includes a slew of attractions including Union Transfer, Underground Arts, and the coming Rail Park

The space will be marginally larger than the current bar, but it will be located on one level. It will keep some of the current aesthetics and personality, he said, though will pick up a greater focus on food. He'll also add TVs, but vows not to turn it into a sports bar.

The Institute will have access to 4,100 square feet on the roof, nine stories up — so Collazo is planning a beer garden up there.
