PHL17 debuts 'all Mummers, all the time' sub-channel

As Philadelphians, we understand the long-standing, yet strange Mummer tradition. Most days, we even love it. But do we love that tradition enough for an 'all Mummers, all the time" channel? PHL17, at least, says yes.

As Philadelphians, we understand the long-standing, yet strange Mummer tradition. Most days, we even love it. But do we love that tradition enough for an 'all Mummers, all the time" channel? PHL17, at least, says yes.

The station announced today the launch of a dedicated Mummers station at sub-channel 17.4 — or channel 253 for Comcast customers and channel 468 for Verizon subscribers. Formerly GeoTraffic, the new Mummers channel will air Mummers parades going back to 1995 from 6 a.m. to midnight, now through the Mummers parade on Jan. 1, 2015.

"This is a great opportunity to show some classic Mummers parades from PHL17's past as we countdown to the 2015 SugarHouse Casino Mummers Parade," PHL17 VP and general manager Vince Giannini said via a press release.

And, technically, he's right — though it's somewhat unclear who exactly was asking for an 18-hours-a-day Mummers channel. However, PHL17's press release does note that its annual broadcast of the Mummers parade is "consistently the most watched television event on New Year's Day." So, in a way, we all asked for this.

In any case, be sure to brace yourselves — the Mummers are coming.
