PLCB opens bidding for third set of expired liquor licenses

Two previous auctions of 79 licenses brought winning bids totaling $12.8 million.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board opened bidding Wednesday on a third set of expired restaurant licenses. Bids for the 50 licences in 40 counties, including nine licenses in Southeastern Pennsylvania, are due June 30.

Nearly half of those proceeds came from Giant Food Stores LLC, of Carlisle, which paid $6 million for 19 licences that can be used to sell beer and wine in supermarkets.

Another big purchaser was Sheetz Inc., an Altoona convenience-store chain, which paid $3 million for 32 licenses.

The priciest licenses in the Philadelphia region were in Chester and Montgomery Counties. Giant paid $526,000 each for licenses in Coatesville and Skippack Township.
