Southwest offers $69 one-way fares between PHL and Fort Lauderdale

Southwest Airlines said Thursday it will begin a daily nonstop flight between Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on June 4.

Southwest is offering introductory fares for as low as $69 one-way between Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale for purchase Jan. 5 through 11:59 p.m. Jan. 26 for travel June 4 through Aug. 14.  The introductory fares are limited to flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with blackout dates June 30 to July 9, the airline said.

"It's great news for Philadelphia. It's going to be year-around service," said Southwest spokeswoman Thais Hanson. "Previously this was seasonal service. The good news is the demand was there.  This is something the people of Philadelphia have been asking for."

Hanson said Southwest offers "things that other airlines just can't -- our low fares, up to two bags that fly free, and no change fees" if flight plans change and a ticket must be rebooked, Hanson said.

The Dallas-based carrier is opening a five-gate international concourse  in Fort Lauderdale, offering daily international nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to Montego Bay, Belize, and Cancun, and to Havana, Varadero and Santa Clara in Cuba, and to Nassau,  Bahamas. The airline has also applied with authorities to fly to Grand Cayman.
