Federal employees will rally Thursday at noon at Independence Mall to protest proposed cuts in federal funding that will likely eliminate jobs in the Environmental Protection Agency, Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, and the National Park Service.

Hundreds are expected to attend, said leaders of the American Federation of Government Employees. Sponsoring the rally is AFGE Local 3631, which represents 700 EPA toxicologists, inspectors, and investigators in Philadelphia, Maryland, and West Virginia and is led by Gary Morton.

David Fitzpatrick, who leads AFGE Local 2058, which represents workers assigned to Independence National Park, said maintenance of the park's historic buildings has been severely neglected and further cuts will put the buildings in danger.
