The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has let stand a $45,000 sanction against insurance defense lawyer Nancy Raynor for seeking to intimidate a witness in a medical-malpractice case by warning the witness's employer, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, that it might be sued over her testimony.

The sanction was imposed by a trial court judge and upheld by a Superior Court panel late last year. The panel concluded that Raynor had attempted to pressure Dr. Stephanie Porges, who had testified against Raynor's client in the medical-malpractice case, into changing her testimony.

In a separate action, the Superior Court had overturned an earlier $1 million sanction against Raynor for allegedly permitting a witness to introduce precluded testimony during a trial. On appeal, the Supreme Court allowed that decision to stand.
