The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine received approval from its accreditation agency to open a new medical school in southwestern Georgia, with the goal of training doctors to serve rural communities, PCOM said Thursday.

The additional PCOM location, in Moultrie, Ga., will be called PCOM South Georgia and is expected to be open in August 2019 with a class of 55 Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine students, PCOM said.

PCOM, whose main campus is located along City Avenue on the western edge of Philadelphia, does not yet have a specific site for the campus. Nor could PCOM, which had nearly $380 million in net assets and no debt at the end of fiscal 2016, say how much it has budgeted for the expansion.

In 2005, PCOM opened a branch campus in Suwanee, a suburb of Atlanta. It offers degrees in biomedical sciences, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies.

PCOM has 1,755 students in Philadelphia and 1,105 in Georgia.
