If Twitter goes to 280 characters, will it lose its character?

Is 140 characters too few? Are 280 too much? Twitter questions its very existence.

Shakespeare wrote that "brevity is the soul of wit," but Twitter may not have read Hamlet.

The little blue bird is experimenting with doubling its character limit from 140 to 280, and the Twitterati of course had a lot to say about it. Delaware Sen. Tom Carper and comedian Ellen DeGeneres even weighed in with a variation on the same joke.

While some understood the value of 280 characters…

Others did not think the change would be significant.
