Fire closes Del. Memorial Bridge span for hours

Major traffic delays were reported in the area.

A fire at a construction site under the Delaware Memorial Bridge closed one span of the major interstate crossing for hours  Wednesday, causing major traffic backups in New Jersey.

Both spans were closed after the fire broke out about 10:30 a.m., but the one to New Jersey reopened within a half-hour.

Officials said they hoped to allow traffic back on the Delaware-bound span around 3 p.m.

The fire on the Delaware side of the river under the Delaware-bound span was quickly brought under control but officials said they could not reopen it until engineers inspected piers charred by the blaze.

No injuries have been reported. The fire is now under control.
