Written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly's band The Crickets, the 56-second Mary Tyler Moore show theme song is a feminist classic with an afterlife long after the show went off the air. Joan Jett did a memorable cover of it, and the definitive rock version was recorded in 1984 by Mary Richards' fellow Minnesotans the punk band Hüsker Dü.

The West Texas bank-robber movie that snagged a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for Jeff Bridges has a killer soundtrack, with instrumental music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis and evocative Americana from Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch, Billy Joe Shaver, and Waylon Jennings. Cloud Nothings. Cleveland rockers fronted by songwriter Dylan Baldi, sounding a little less punky but still catchy as all get-out on the brand-new Life Without Sound. Tuesday at Union Transfer.
