The Roots will play four Radio City Music Hall shows in New York with comedian Dave Chappelle in August, as part of a 10 night stand at the storied mid-town Manhattan venue. Also appearing during the run will be comedians Chris Rock, Ali Wong and Trevor Noah, as well as Childish Gambino and Erykah Badu.

The dates with the Philadelphia hip-hop band start off the residency on Aug. 1 to 4. Before this year's Roots Picnic, drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson told me that there would not be a Roots Picnic NYC this year – the fest debut last October in Bryant Park and hopes to move to a larger site in 2018 – but hinted that the band was up to something big in New York. So here it is.

Chappelle and the Roots have a long history. Questlove appeared on the stand-up comic's Comedy Central sketch show in 2004 with John Mayer, and along with Kanye West, Badu, John Legend, Mos Def, Jill Scott and many other, the Roots performed in Michel Gondry's 2005 film Dave Chappelle's Block Party.

Tickets for the Radio City shows go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday via Ticketmaster.
