Sunday night's Golden Globe ensembles landed in one of three categories: ethereal and pink, sleek and metallic, or tuxedo chic — and that made for a very classy night on the award ceremony's 74th annual red carpet.

This is Us star Mandy Moore, in a beyond-elegant caped Neem Khan, set the tone. The best dress of the night was a custom Armani worn by singer and Hidden Figures actress Janelle Monae — talk about grown-up flounce. Creamy winter whites (Sarah Jessica Parker for Divorce in Vera Wang that reminded everyone of Carrie Fisher) and bold yellows (Viola Davis for Fences in a sparkling one-shoulder Michael Kors sheath) were also among the night's shining colors, while chandelier earrings added a fair amount of shoulder-grazing glamour.

Each year the men coming down the red carpet look better and better. Cuba Gooding Jr., who played O.J. Simpson, in his blue and green plaid blazer, was worth mentioning, as was the Kenneth Cole jacket worn by Sterling K. Brown (who played attorney Christopher Darden). Justin Timberlake in Tom Ford for "Can't Stop the Feeling" was as close to perfect as possible.

But the most notable — notice I didn't say best dressed? — male ensemble of the evening belonged to musician Pharrell Williams, nominated for the score of Hidden Figures. What other man do you know who can wear Sgt. Pepper-inspired Chanel with such aplomb?

Lily Collins was sweet in a lacy confection by Zuhair Murad and a ballerina bun

If This is Us star Milo Ventimiglia is a harbinger of what's to come on the Golden Globes red carpet, navy blue will be a hot hue tonight.

Kristen Bell did tuxedo chic uber well in @Jennypackham. Black. Sparkles. Deep-v #winning

Mandy Moore looked dark and chic in a caped Naeem Khan

Not a fan of Michelle Williams in lacy Louis Vuitton. Too bony.

Jessica Biel in floral Elie Saab was revealing – in a good way.

Kerry Washington's hair and makeup are fab. The golden gown, not so much.

Amy Adams stunned in a body-skimming Tom Ford and drop earrings.

Natalie Portman channeled her inner Jackie in this lemon yellow Prada gown with chandelier earrings.

OMG, Pharrell's Sgt. Pepper get-up, complete with knit hat.

Ruth Negga dazzled in a metallic gown with exposed zipper by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton.

Liked everything about Tracee Ellis Ross' sparkly, midi-length Zuhair Murad gown. The rings - one on every single finger — were a bit too much.

Issa Rae looked phenom in the icy, form-fitting Christian Sirano. Beautiful.

Sarah Jessica Parker was Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia chic in Vera Wang while Drew Barrymore's evoked sexy, fairytale princess in Monique Lhuillier.

And my favorite dress of the night ... Janelle Monae in Armani.
