Streep 'over-rated?' Uh, no

O-VER-RATED! O-VER-RATED! If you've ever been to a high school or college athletic event in which a plucky home underdog outplayed a prohibitive favorite, you've heard the chant.

O-VER-RATED! O-VER-RATED!

If you've ever been to a high school or college athletic event in which a plucky home underdog outplayed a prohibitive favorite, you've heard the chant.

Tattle has always found it silly because it, in fact, diminishes the feat of the underdog - if you're beating a team that's overrated, it's not as big an accomplishment.

Sunday night, the o-ver-rated chant came from the president-elect of the United States of America aimed at an actress who chided him for his bullying behavior during the election.

Donald Trump, of course, took offense, and on Monday called Meryl Streep "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood."

We can all argue about whether the Golden Globes was the proper forum for such a speech, but Streep was receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, ironically named for Cecil B. DeMille (more right-wing than many in Hollywood during his career), and didn't have to thank a director, co-star or her manager and publicist.

Trump supporters can argue as to whether Trump actually did mock the disabled New York Times reporter, as Streep and many others claimed.

We can argue whether Streep was talking down to Trump voters, sucking up to a Dem-friendly crowd, speaking politically or merely empathetically or still campaigning as a surrogate for Hillary Clinton.

The only thing that is, in fact, inarguable is that Meryl Streep is over-rated as an actress.

Did you watch that film clip montage?

Different looks, different accents, comedies, dramas, musicals – has any actor or actress ever played as many different types of roles over as long a career?

Streep has earned 19 Oscar nominations and three wins. She has a record 29 Golden Globe nominations and eight wins. She has two Emmy Awards.

Forget the Presidential Medal of Freedom (that's just liberals feting liberals, right?), Streep has won 10 People's Choice Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, four National Society of Film Critics Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor. Add in a Tony Award nomination, five Grammy Award nominations, the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award, an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, an American Comedy Award, an Irish Film and Television Award, two Italian Online Movie Awards, two Teen Choice Award nominations and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Over-rated? Streep is on the Mt. Rushmore of actresses. Instead of calling her over-rated, Trump should hope he's half as good a president as Streep is an actress.

That would serve the country very well.

* Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of President George W. Bush, apologized on the Today show Monday morning for calling Hidden Figures Hidden Fences while interviewing Pharrell Williams on the Golden Globes red carpet.

Twitter ridicule quickly followed.

"I had an error in the night, which I have to apologize for," Bush Hager told NBC colleagues Natalie Morales and Al Roker, with tears in her eyes. "When I was interviewing the incomparable Pharrell, who I adore, I accidentally - in the electricity of the red carpet, which I have never done before - I called Hidden Figures 'Hidden Fences.' I have seen both movies. I thought they were both brilliant. I have interviewed casts from both of the movies. If I offended people, I am deeply sorry. It was a mistake, because you all know, I am not perfect. I am authentic but a human. What I didn't want to do is make anybody feel lesser than who they are. So, anyway, I hope . . . I apologized to both the cast, to Pharrell, but it was a mistake and I hope we can all move on."

That the troll-iverse has gotten so bad that someone has to go on TV to apologize for the broadcast equivalent of a typo is ridiculous. Williams and star Octavia Spencer quickly tweeted acceptance of Bush Hager's apology.

* In an event sure to keep the culture wars burning, the Women's March on Washington announced the celebrity lineup for the demonstration a day after the Trump inauguration.

The "Artist Table" will be chaired by America Ferrera, the Washington Post reports, and will include Patricia Arquette, Cher, Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Schumer, Olivia Wilde, Debra Messing and more A-list stars.

According to the news release, more than 100,000 are expected to attend the march, which will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 21 on the National Mall.

Today in fake news A story shared on social media that claims President Barack Obama pardoned rapper C-Murder, who was convicted of murder in a 2002 slaying in Louisiana, is false.

Obama could not have pardoned Miller even if he wanted to because Miller was convicted of a state crime and not a federal crime.

The websites corrected the story by claiming Obama pardoned Tupac and Biggie.
