Eastern University to get new president

Long-time music professor will take the helm at the Christian university in St. Davids.

Eastern University, a Christian school in St. Davids, is getting a new president — a music professor who has worked there since 1992.

Ronald A. Matthews, executive director of the Fine and Performing Arts Division at Eastern and chair of the music department, will take over March 1, the school announced.

He will replace Robert G. Duffett, who has led the university since July 2013 and has resigned to "pursue another goal of significant importance to him both personally and professionally," said Steve Clemens, chair of the board of trustees.

A university spokeswoman said the 3,500-student school would have no further comment about that goal.

Matthews, 65, is a graduate of the Westminster Choir College and got his master of music degree in choral conducting from Temple University and doctor of musical arts from Combs College of Music. He also has served as a pastor at Church of the Saviour in Wayne. He's married and has two sons.
