Classical picks: Dover plays Mozart; A John Cage app

Dover returns to Curtis.

There's no shortage of string quartets coming out of the world's great conservatories, but one of the better string quartet discs of 2016 was

Dover Quartet Plays Mozart

on the Cedille label. One piece from that album -

String Quartet in F Major K. 590

- is in the group's concert next Sunday at the Curtis Institute, where Dover formed in 2008. Though coached by the members of the now-disbanded Guarneri Quartet, Dover has a strong mind of its own manifested by a keen attention to sound, and in Mozart, distinctively gracious restraint. The 3 p.m. concert also features Britten's

String Quartet No. 2

and the Dvorák

String Quintet Op. 97

4'33": The App. John Cage, we are sure, would have loved it. The composer died in 1992, well before the iPhone came along, but now you can download an app to upload your own performance of his most famous composition. 4'33" is the piece he wrote in which the player sits there for four minutes and 33 seconds not playing, while listeners take in all the accidental music that happens in life in the form of sound around us. The app allows you to upload your performance and share it with other listeners, while accessing other performances of 4'33" from around the world.
