Disney's next Genie will officially be a Philly boul, but whether any of his new magic will involve the word "jawn" is anybody's guess.
In addition to Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott will appear as Princess Jasmine, and Mena Massoud, a newcomer, will play Aladdin. Guy Ritchie will direct. Previously, Kevin Hart was reportedly considered for the Genie role, which Robin Williams helmed in the 1992 animated original.
Little detail about the film has been made available, but Deadline reported earlier this year that the Aladdin remake is set to begin shooting this month in the United Kingdom. The script, written by John August, is based on the original movie, which follows Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and Genie, who helps the titular character along the way with three wishes.
During its 1992 theatrical run, Aladdin netted Disney some $504 million worldwide, and took home Academy Awards for best score and best song for "A Whole New World." It went on to inspire two sequels (The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves), an animated series, and a line of video games.
