The internet was shook by Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert and Ed Sheeran's performance at MTV VMAs

The pairing, the night's most unique combination, sparked animated reactions from the crowd.

Pop crooner Ed Sheeran opened up the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards with a little help from an unexpected — and oddly matched — guest: Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert.

Hot off the release of his debut studio album, Luv Is Rage 2, Vert joined Sheeran on stage for a remixed performance of the rapper's "XO Tour Llif3," backed by a full band. Sheeran and Vert also performed a version of Sheeran's "Shape of You."

The pairing, the night's most unique combination, sparked animated reactions from the crowd. Most notable, however, was rapper Cardi B, who couldn't hide her disbelief:

In addition to performing the track at the VMAs, Vert took home an award for song of the summer with "XO Tour Llif3." The rapper's other big hit, "Bad & Boujee" with Migos, was nominated for a best hip hop video award.
