Camden's Ray Fisher talks 'Cyborg' role and solo movie

LOS ANGELES — Justice League may have had a disappointing opening weekend after a mixed critical response, but almost everyone has praised Ray Fisher's portrayal of part man/part machine Cyborg.

The Camden, N.J., native said that a key is that, although he was originally unfamiliar with the character, he was determined to learn and portray him in a way that would make his die-hard comic book fans happy.

"I actually learned about Cyborg..through the cartoon shows and I think that's how most people learn about Cyborg," said Fisher. "It's a much different character in it's comic (form)."

""So, when I took the role, (Warner Bros.) sent me just about every Cyborg comic that existed — and I got to pick and choose bits and pieces of the character that I wanted to use for my interpretation," Fisher said. "The crux of what I used was from the "New Teen Titans" version of Cyborg — which was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez — and that is the character's deeper journey about how he feels about himself and, regarding his powers, realizing that they are gifts and curses at the same time, depending on how you look at it."

Fisher feels the same way about the thousands of calories in the diet the studio put him on in order to bulk him up for the role.

"You're dealing with five meals — three large meals and two small meals — a day," Fisher said. "So you're not thinking about getting another bite to eat. You're not thinking about anything food related after that!"

One thing Fisher is hungry for — and which he feels the fans are as well — is a long-in-development solo "Cyborg" film that would truly showcase the character and his abilities and personality.

"Well, I can't say anything specifically about that, outside of it being in development." he said. "But I'm working hard and it's something that people want."
