Kevin Smith, the New Jersey-born and bred director of indie films such as Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma, has been hospitalized after suffering what he called a "massive" heart attack following a stand-up performance in California.

In a post on Twitter, the 47-year-old Comic Book Men reality TV show creator and host said he had a "widow maker" blockage of his left anterior descending artery and would have died if he had not canceled a second performance so he could go to the hospital.

"But for now, I'm still above ground," Smith said.

According to the New York Daily News, Smith was performing in Glendale, Calif., Sunday night when he suffered the heart attack.

His representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment.
