NBC may have swiped Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson for The Voice, but the judging panel of ABC's reboot of American Idol won't lack star power.
Pop star Katy Perry was announced Tuesday as the "anchor judge" of the new Idol, which is expected to premiere at midseason, in 2018. ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey, who earlier in the day in a conference call with reporters had avoided mentioning any casting details for the show, made the announcement to advertisers in New York.
"I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories, Perry said in a prepared statement released by ABC. "I'm always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough — from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music."
