On Wednesday night, the Franklin Institute welcomed the Eik Sande, a 32-foot-long reconstructed Viking ship. Inquirer and Daily News photographer Tom Gralish was there to capture the installation. The 1,100-pound ship will be suspended from the ceiling of the central atrium of the museum for the duration of an exhibit, Vikings: Beyond the Legend, that opens on Oct. 13.

Vikings is a collection of 600 artifacts on loan from the National Museum of Denmark to provide a more accurate portrayal of Vikings as artisans, farmers, traders, and explorers. The Eik Sande, which represents exploration in Viking history and culture, was reconstructed in the Viking Ship Museum's boatyard using the same techniques as were used during the Viking Age, without a saw. This will be the exhibit's North American premiere. It closes on March 3, 2019.
