Sitting at the intersection of Grays Ferry and Washington Avenues, across from an industrial landscape of humming electric lines, Aprons Soul Food Restaurant feels a little out of the way. But the vibe inside is relaxed and homey.

Aprons has been in Grays Ferry for two years, since moving from its North Philadelphia location near Temple. The menu offers Southern mainstays, such as collard greens, corn bread, and macaroni and cheese, as well as several fried chicken and fish options.

The chicken and waffles is served with three fried wings stacked atop a sweet potato waffle, alongside a big dollop of butter melting over the center. The waffle batter is made with sweet potatoes, said general manager Melissa Jordan, and baked with spices that include cinnamon and nutmeg. The finished waffle is sweet and savory, and topped with crispy chicken dredged in flour and spices, then deep-fried.

The fried catfish, another menu standout, has an addictive crunch. It's seasoned with flavors that include Old Bay, then crusted with cornmeal and cooked in a cast-iron skillet.

"That's how it comes out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside," Jordan said.
