The annual Orionid Meteor Shower peaks this weekend and the best viewing in the Philadelphia area will be Friday night into Saturday morning.

"The meteors that streak across the sky are some of the fastest and brightest among meteor showers, because the Earth is hitting a stream of particles almost head on," says space.com.

The particles come from Halley's Comet, which passes near Earth every 75 or 76 years.

Look to the southeast sky and the constellation Orion — thus the name Orionid — to catch the action. The best viewing, of course, will be away from the city and any light pollution.

The National Weather Service says the best time to watch in the Philadelphia area will be in the predawn hours Saturday.

Unfortunately, the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies Saturday night and and cloudy skies Sunday night, when the shower will be at the tail end of its peak.
