Currently a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, the storm is expected to hit as far north on the East Coast as Maryland.

Governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia have declared states of emergency in advance of the storm, and over one million people have been ordered to evacuate the coastal area.
