A 48-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot Friday night during an attempted robbery at the store she owns in the city's Mantua section, police said.

About 8:30 p.m., a neighbor went to Freddy Grocery in the 3400 block of Fairmount Avenue and found the woman slumped behind the counter bleeding from her neck, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. The woman was taken by medics to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Store surveillance video shows that a man in a black hooded sweatshirt entered the store and announced the robbery and the woman appeared to comply, Walker said. But for some reason the man shot her and fled without taking anything.

Anyone with information about the crime can call 215-686-TIPS.
