How to help those in Irma's path
Local and national organizations are providing or planning aid for Hurricane Irma victims.
Many charities still are dealing with the aftermath of Houston's storm, but those looking to help people affected by Hurricane Irma can do so through local or national organizations. (For tips on helping Hurricane Harvey victims, look here.)
Red Cross: Text IRMA to the number 90999 to make financial donations. The local chapter has sent seven Red Cross of Philadelphia disaster workers to South Carolina and Florida to run shelters and relief efforts.
Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia: Donate through helpsalvationarmy.org or by calling 1-800-SALARMY. The local chapter sent about three people from Philadelphia to the Caribbean ahead of the storm and plans on sending volunteers to Florida, a spokesman said.
Unidos PA' PR, a group convened by Philadelphia City Councilwoman Maria Quiñones-Sánchez and state lawmakers Angel Cruz and Emilio Vasquez, Philadelphia Democrats, is collecting donations to aid recovery in Puerto Rico at El Concilio. The Philadelphia-based nonprofit Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha for Everyone asks those wishing to donate to help victims in Puerto Rico to visit its website at apmphila.org or to send a check to its Philadelphia office at 1900 N. Ninth St., Suite 102, Philadelphia 19122 with "Hurricane Irma" written in the memo.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia expects to send Catholic Social Services workers to Florida in the coming week and to begin fund-raising efforts. Its parent organization, Catholic Charities USA, has a donation line set up at 1-800-919-9338 to accept donations for disaster and recovery efforts.
