A 1-year-old boy was killed Thursday when he and his mother were struck by a pickup truck outside Hahnemann University Hospital in Center City, police said.

The child's 36-year-old mother was hurt but is expected to survive, police said.

The woman and her son were hit by a silver pickup truck while crossing Vine Street at 15th Street about 10:25 a.m., officials said.

The driver, who was not identified, remained at the scene. The intersection is a merging point for eastbound Vine Street traffic and vehicles exiting I-676.

Both victims were rushed into Hahnemann, where the child was pronounced dead at 11:46 a.m., police said. His mother was reported to be in stable condition. The child's name was not released.

An investigation is underway, and no charges were immediately filed.
