Police charge Mayfair man in hit-and-run that left 3-year-old in critical

The girl's 4-year-old sister and their mother also suffered minor injuries in the incident. The driver was taken into custody after fleeing on foot, police said.

Police on Wednesday said the driver who fled after running over a 3-year-old girl in Northeast Philadelphia's Mayfair section Tuesday evening has been charged with aggravated assault while DUI and other crimes.

Police said after striking the girl and her 35-year-old mother and 4-year-old sister while they were walking on the 3200 block of Tyson Avenue about 6:45 p.m., Zachary Lauer ran off while bystanders rushed in to lift his 1999 Honda Prelude off the severely injured child.

Medics took the girl to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where she was reported in critical condition with burns to the body, police said. The child's sister and mother were also taken to Jefferson Torresdale to be treated for minor scrapes and pains.

Lauer, 31, of the 3200 block of Princeton Avenue in Mayfair, was arrested Wednesday, police said. He was also charged with aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering the welfare of children.
