Teen trapped in Lancaster cave
The call for help came in about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to help the boy stuck about 200 feet inside Wind Cave.
Teams of rescue workers were attempting to free a teenage boy Saturday night who became trapped in a cave in southwestern Lancaster County.
A 911 call for help came in at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a Lancaster County dispatch supervisor. The trapped boy, believed to be about 15 years old, had gotten wedged and stuck about 200 feet into Wind Cave off Bridge Valley Road in Martic Township.
"There was some sort of organized group," the dispatch supervisor said. "There was a cave guide."
Personnel from the Rawlinsville fire department were dispatched to the scene, followed by workers with the Lancaster County Rescue Task Force. The York County Advanced Technical Rescue Team also was called in to assist. The supervisor said several dozen rescue workers in all were sent to the cave, which is popular with spelunkers.
As of 10 p.m. Saturday, the effort to free the boy was continuing. The supervisor said there were no reports yet of serious injury. However, a police transmission said a director with Lancaster General Hospital was headed to the scene.
Wind Cave, also known as Cold Cave because of its nearly freezing temperatures year 'round, is one of the largest tectonic caves in the eastern United States, according to a Lancaster County tourism website.
