Theodore L. Hill Jr., 82, of Paoli, a longtime dentist on the Main Line, died Monday, Sept. 26, of a heart attack at Paoli Hospital.

Dr. Hill retired two years ago after practicing for 45 years from offices in Paoli. His patients, some of whom were several generations of the same family, came from Maryland, New York, and the western Main Line.

Born in Greenville, S.C. to Edith Hoke and Theodore L. Hill, he was a graduate of St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Del., Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, and Temple University Dental School.

Until just before his death, Dr. Hill was teaching dentistry two days a week at Temple and volunteering in the school's dental clinic each Friday, guiding young dentists.

"He had a very full week," said his wife, Lana Platt Hill.

He was a member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry (Fellow), and the Academy of Stomatology. Stomatology is the medical study of the mouth and its diseases.

While at Temple, he enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He served in the Navy before being honorably discharged in 1958.

Dr. Hill enjoyed tennis, paddle tennis, and doing crossword puzzles. He owned a sailboat, which he sailed for 40 years on the Chesapeake Bay.

He also enjoyed hiking, camping, and fly fishing. Since 1969, he had been a member of Wantastiquet Trout Club, a sportsmen's group that stocks and propagates fish in the lakes and ponds near Weston, Vt.

Dr. Hill was a 35-year member of the Church of the Good Samaritan in Paoli, where he served as vestryman and a Bible study leader.

Besides his wife, he is survived by sons Theodore L. III and Douglas B.; daughter Dorothy E.; stepdaughters Deborah J. Sulli and Kathleen J. Schneider; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a sister; and nieces and nephews.

A visitation starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, will be followed by an 11 a.m. life celebration at the Church of the Good Samaritan, 212 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli, Pa. 19301. Interment is in the churchyard.
