Eight Rutgers football players reportedly stole $11,000 in a credit card scam, according to an NJ.com report.

Police said the scam was led by sophomore linebacker Brendan DeVera and defensive back K.J. Gray. The two were charged with credit-card fraud and money laundering. They were both dismissed from Rutgers earlier this summer for a "violation of team rules" according to NJ.com.

The other six players accused — Malik Dixon, Naijee Jones, Edwin Lopez, Kobe Marfo, C.J. Onyechi, and Syhiem Simmons — face lesser charges of conspiracy to commit credit card fraud. They have a hearing scheduled for Sept. 13.

Rutgers' athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a statement: "We are very disappointed and frustrated. We have been working extremely hard to build a culture of excellence across the department and this news detracts from the great strides we have made. We will continue that work."
