Can Villanova reclaim college basketball's No.1 spot this soon?
With No.1 ranked Michigan State and No.2 Duke losing this week, it stands to reason that the third-ranked Wildcats (14-1) will vault back to No.1 in the nation.
In another whacky weekend of déjà vu all over again in college basketball, a string of upsets will likely land Villanova back on top of the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches Poll after a one-week absence.
With No.1 ranked Michigan State (14-2) getting smacked down 80-64 by unranked Ohio State on Sunday coupled with No.2 Duke (13-2) losing to unranked North Carolina State, 96-85, on Saturday, it stands to reason that the third-ranked Wildcats (14-1) will vault back to No.1 in the nation after beating Marquette on Saturday.
Villanova was the only member of the Top 5 to not lose last week. Fourth-ranked Arizona State lost its second straight game on Thursday and No.5 Xavier had its 10-game winning streak ended by Providence on Saturday.
Considering the 'Cats had just fallen out of the top spot by losing at Butler last weekend, it's possible that sixth-ranked West Virginia (14-1), which beat No.7 Oklahoma for its 14th consecutive win since losing its opener could jump past everyone and take over as No.1.
The Mountaineers also have a win over eighth-ranked Virginia (14-1).
