Tues. S.J. boys’ roundup: Pennsville finally beats Pitman

After losing a pair of regular-season meetings to Tri-County Conference Classic Division baseball champion Pitman by 4-2 and 16-7, visiting Pennsville got a measure of revenge on Tuesday.

The Eagles, seeded fifth in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 sectional playoffs, eliminated the top-seeded Panthers, 12-2, in the tournament semifinals.

Trailing by 2-0, Pennsville started its comeback with Tim Mathias' solo homer in the third inning. The Eagles pulled away with an eight-run sixth inning in which Kenny Emmons (two runs, five RBIs) hit a grand slam.

Pennsville will face Audubon for the title on Thursday.

South Jersey Group 4. Millville managed just one hit, a two-run double by Aaron Cox, but escaped with a 3-2 win over visiting Toms River South. Colin Meandro walked and scored on a passed ball for the winning run.

South Jersey Group 3. Moorestown reached double figures in a game for the ninth time this season during a 17-4 sectional semifinal win over visiting Kingsway.

Andrew Lisa, who led off the Quakers' 10-run first inning with a single, also homered in the same inning, and Nick Savino, Dylan Waller and Dallas Clark homered in the fourth inning.

Eighth-seeded Seneca, coming off a win over top-seeded Highland, added a 9-2 victory at No. 4 seed Central Regional. Kevin Comer pitched five scoreless innings, Ryan Williams drove in four runs with a single and two home runs, and Joseph Banes chipped in with three hits and three runs scored.

South Jersey Group 2. Tony Urban pitched a complete game and also doubled in a run as West Deptford ousted visiting Point Pleasant Boro, 3-1. Urban fanned eight and allowed three hits, and the Eagles plated unearned runs on a double steal in the third inning and a two-out error in the fourth.

Eighth-seeded Haddonfield will be West Deptford's opponent in the final after winning, 6-2, at No. 4 seed Lower Cape May. Matt Binter earned the pitching win, and Matt Bhaya sealed the outcome with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Central Jersey Group 1. Florence is one win from a sectional crown after disposing of visiting Metuchen, 3-0. T. J. Karwowski doubled in a run, John Zoppina singled in another and Cameron Lung scored on an error.

Pitcher Jake DeWitt (6-1) struck out nine in the three-hit shutout.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Ed Charlton homered in the first inning and started St. Augustine toward a 5-2 quarterfinal win over visiting St. Joseph-Metuchen.

Charlton drove in two runs, Carlo Randazzo lined a pair of doubles, and pitcher Ed Rakus (8-0) tossed a seven-strikeout complete game.

Paul VI advanced with an 8-4 win at Bishop Ahr in which Ned Kerr (four RBIs) lined a three-run double and John MacAulay hit a two-run homer.

Anthony Baglivo's home run and A. J. Martinez's pitching carried Holy Spirit past visiting Bishop Eustace, 11-4.

South Jersey Non-Public B. Sacred Heart broke open a close game with a five-run fourth inning and knocked off host Timothy Christian, 11-1. Bobby Gifford had a two-run single in the fourth, and winning pitcher Holvin Figueroa knocked in two runs.

Mark Zagunis slugged his 11th home run of the season and 30th of his career in Holy Cross' 11-2 triumph over visiting Moorestown Friends.

Haddonfield bowed out of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions with a 5-0 loss to Millburn at Mercer County Park.

Luke Grabiak battled in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 loss to Robert Xie at second singles for the state Group 2 champion Bulldogs.

Sterling Long netted his 100th career goal as Bishop Eustace whipped host Holy Cross, 19-4, in the Olympic Conference. Long finished with four goals and six assists, helping the Crusaders (12-3) to their first division championship in the program's four-year history.
