DARIUS MADISON scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season, including the game-winner in overtime, as La Salle posted a dramatic, 2-1 win over Father Judge in the Catholic League boys' soccer championship game at Archbishop Ryan yesterday.
After Judge's Kevin Pohl tied the game with 15 minutes left in regulation - the first goal allowed by La Salle (18-1) against a Catholic League opponent this season - Madison ended the game 55 seconds into overtime off a header assist by Tyler Gimbel on a corner kick. La Salle, which won its first league crown since 2006, will face Washington for the District 12 title today at Northeast. Judge finished 14-4-1.
Northeast avenged a disappointing loss to Washington in last year's Public League field hockey title game by edging the Eagles, 1-0, on a late goal by Emile Thompson in the final at Germantown.
Thompson scored off a corner with an assist by Chloe Richardson with 54 seconds left in the second half. Kimberly Ortiz' 12th shutout in goal gave the Vikings (14-2-1) their first title since 2009.
Masterman grabbed its sixth straight Public League girls' volleyball championship with a 25-20, 23-25, 26-16, 25-11 win over Northeast in the league final at Lincoln.
Camille Green contributed 34 digs, eight kills and three aces, Taneil Ruffin had 26 assists, and Sophia Elliot added 14 digs, nine kills and three blocks as the Blue Dragons wrapped up their sixth straight unbeaten season in league play. Masterman will face Lansdale Catholic for the District 12 title tomorrow.
Twins Katie and Megan Kelly teamed up for the game-winning goal early in the second half, leading Archbishop Carroll to a 3-1 win over rival Cardinal O'Hara in the Catholic League field hockey championship at Neumann College.
