Thurs. Pa. football roundup: Boyertown beats U. Perkiomen

Boyertown's Max Marcus needed just one quarter to turn a close game into a rout.

With the score tied at 21 entering the fourth quarter, the tailback rushed for three touchdowns in the fourth to lead the host Bears to a 42-21, Pioneer Athletic Conference win over Upper Perkiomen on Thursday.

Marcus finished with a game-high 169 rushing yards. His longest touchdown was a 40-yard scamper to increase the lead to 35-21.

This was the last game for Upper Perkiomen coach Keith Leamer, who resigned earlier this week after eight seasons at the helm.

With the win, Boyertown (6-6 overall, 3-6 league), leads the rivalry, 9-3, and has won three of the last four meetings with the Indians (5-7, 3-6).

Pottstown 49, Owen J. Roberts 6 - Malik Brinkley rushed for five touchdowns and Pottstown (4-8, 3-6) easily turned away the visiting Wildcats (1-11, 0-9).

Corey Baker aided Brinkley with a game-high 176 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Mike Clancy rushed for two touchdowns, and Haverford High held off visiting Upper Darby, 21-16, to secure its second straight rivalry win.

Upper Darby still leads the traditional holiday rivalry that began in 1910, 43-41-6.

Clancy's 2-yard run in the third quarter put Haverford (7-5, 5-4) ahead, 21-10, before Fred Thorpe tacked on an Upper Darby (3-9, 2-7) touchdown in the fourth.

Legende Whitfield returned a kickoff 52 yards for a touchdown as Imhotep Charter rallied to top visiting Boys' Latin, 13-6.

Whitfield's first-quarter return handed the Panthers (8-4) a 7-6 lead before Eerin Young rushed for a touchdown in the third period to beat Latin for the second straight year. Mike Hammock hauled in a 34-yard pass to put the Warriors (7-5) on the board in the first quarter.

West Philadelphia 26, Overbrook 0 - For the first time in 10 years, the Speedboys (11-1) knocked off visiting Overbrook (4-7). The win is West's 11th of the season, a school record. Desmond Sams led the way with two rushing touchdowns, including a 54-yard sprint to open the scoring.

Frankford 49, Fels 26 - Mike Brown racked up five touchdowns as the Pioneers (8-3) ran away with an easy win over visiting Fels (4-8) for the second straight year.

Brown caught three touchdowns, rushed for another, and returned a kickoff to the end zone. Quarterback Tim DiGiorgio threw four touchdowns for Frankford.

Neumann-Goretti 35, Southern 7 - Southern had no answer for the Saints' Shane Thomas and Sharif Custis as visiting Neumann-Goretti (4-7) rolled to the easy win.

Thomas threw for four touchdowns, three of which found Custis. The two also aided the Saints' solid defensive effort, with Thomas as a defensive back and Custis as an end.

Thomas was named the team's game MVP. Nate Robinson won the awared for Southern (1-10).

Hatboro-Horsham 48, Upper Moreland 0 - The Hatters (5-7) found the end zone five times in the first half and cruised past visiting Upper Moreland (2-10).

Dom DeFazio and Casey Saverio each rushed for two touchdowns, including Saverio's 64-yard sprint to open the scoring. As a linebacker, DeFazio added 10 solo tackles as the defense stymied the Golden Bears.

Archbishop Ryan 19, Washington 0 - For the fourth time in their last five meetings, the Raiders knocked off host Washington (8-4).

Connor Golden handed Ryan (5-6) a 12-point lead before halftime, as he rumbled 50 yards into the end zone after recovering a blocked punt. Marc Ostrazewski and Mike Anusky each threw for Ryan touchdowns.

The teams did not meet in 2008 and 2009 due to the Eagles' participation in the PIAA playoffs.

Father Judge 48, Lincoln 7 - The Crusaders' defense put forth its best effort of the season, and it came through to whip host Lincoln.

Judge (7-4) allowed a season-low 107 total yards, recovered six fumbles, and recorded one interception. Eric Condron led the way with four sacks.

This was Judge's 22d straight win over Lincoln (7-5), dating back to 1989, the longest streak in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

South Hunterdon 12, New Hope-Solebury 10 - In the first meeting of the two schools, the host Lions fell to South Hunterdon on a fourth-quarter touchdown. Devon Troutman rushed for the game-winning score with eight minutes left in regulation, his second of the game.

Danny Sutton connected on a 28-yard field goal to send New Hope-Solebury (5-6) into the half leading by 10-6.

Germantown 43, Martin Luther King 0 - Aaron Boyd had his way with the Golden Cougars' defense as he led host Germantown (7-5) to a shutout win.

Boyd rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns while adding two interceptions, a sack, and a fumble recovery on defense.

The win is the Bears' fourth over King (3-8) in the last five years.

Truman 49, Conwell-Egan 14 - Sophomore running back Marvin Todd led the way as Truman rocked the visiting Eagles in a battle of teams looking for their first win.

Todd rushed for six touchdowns and gained a game-high 304 yards. Truman (1-11) scored all but one of its touchdowns in the first half and led the Eagles (0-10) by 42-14 at halftime.

Abington 42, Cheltenham 7 - Ray Schreiner scampered for a 60-yard score, and the visiting Ghosts (9-2) never looked back as they downed Cheltenham.

Schreiner's run opened the scoring in a 27-point first quarter, and he added two more touchdowns in the half. All three of his touchdowns were longer than 20 yards.

Anthony Marshall scored a late touchdown to provide the scoring for the Panthers (5-7).

Bartram 22, Del-Val Charter 6 - Brandon Jones' 81-yard touchdown sprint in the fourth quarter was an exclamation point in Bartram's win at Del-Val Charter.

The run increased the 10-point Bartram lead to 16, which proved too much for the Warriors (3-8) to overcome.

William Berry and Davon Crawford found the end zone for the Maroon Wave (3-10) in the first quarter.

Communications Tech 36, Olney 0 - James Brunson threw for two touchdowns, and Roland Ransom rushed for three as the Phoenix (9-3) cruised past host Olney (2-9).

Jarred Jones ran for a pair of scores, including the game-winner with 7 minutes, 15 seconds left in the fourth period, as Spring-Ford clinched the Pioneer Athletic Conference championship with a 27-21 triumph at Phoenixville.

Phoenixville (9-4 overall, 5-4 league), which will play for the District 1 Class AAA championship on Saturday against Pottsgrove, battled back to tie the game at 21. Justin McDougal's short TD run was followed by Alec McQuiston's conversion pass to Justin Andrews, setting the stage for Jones' 31-yard game-winner for the Rams (10-2, 9-0).

Furness 20, Prep Charter 14 - On the night when his No. 1 football jersey was retired, Sharif Smith scored all of Furness' three touchdowns and ended his career by helping the Falcons claim the South Philly Bowl in overtime against visiting Prep Charter.

Smith, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior who is the school's all-time leading rusher, scored on runs of 1 and 22 yards in regulation and added a 3-yarder in overtime.

The Furness defense then stopped Prep Charter's possession in overtime and preserved the nonleague win.

Mastbaum 16, University City 14 - Frank Quiles scored on a 7-yard run with 7:21 remaining as the Panthers (3-9) edged visiting University City (3-9).

Mastbaum scored in the first half with Keith Bolden's 5-yard run and Jimelkin Bofrey's 31-yard field goal.

The Jaguars' biggest play was Quawdire Gordon's 67-yard interception return for a touchdown.
