St. Joseph's Prep ice hockey coach David Giacomin, son of former New York Rangers Hall of Fame goaltender Ed Giacomin, recently picked up his 100th victory at the school.

Giacomin began coaching Prep hockey in the 2013-2014 season. Since then, he has led the Prep, which is the newest of the Class AAA hockey programs in Southeastern Pennsylvania, to a Flyers Cup final, two Flyers Cup semifinals, and a Gonzaga Purple Puck championship, in which they defeated Loyola of Montreal.

"Five years ago, I wouldn't have thought I would have the opportunity to work with so many great young men and their families," Giacomin said. "The 100 wins just means that the young men have embraced the culture and have played hard and achieved success.

"It has been a pleasure to be a part of this great school, and if a family has the means to send a son here you will not be disappointed."

Most recently, the Hawks won the Jesuit Cup Championship in Chicago — defeating the top-ranked high school team in Illinois — and finished second at the Hoosier Cup at Notre Dame.

Giacomin has built the Prep hockey program to more than three fully-rostered teams, including a pair of varsity teams.

Giacomin played hockey at Brother Rice High (Mich.) and Bowling Green University. He went on to play for the Denver Rangers in the International Hockey League and the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League. He never played in the NHL.

Giacomin stopped playing hockey in his early 20s and finished his college education, earning a business degree at Iona. Before becoming the coach at St. Joe's Prep, Giacomin was a youth hockey coach for the Haverford Hawks and Delaware Ducks.

Ed Giacomin was beloved by Rangers fans. The Hall of Famer helped lead the Blueshirts to nine straight playoff appearances and a 1972 trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. He had his No. 1 jersey retired in 1987.
