Wednesday's Pa. roundup: Sun Valley's Vinny DeAngelo scores 1,000 career points as Vanguards head to states

Vinny DeAngelo finished with a game-high 20 points and surpassed 1,000 for his career Wednesday as the Sun Valley boys' basketball team punched its ticket into the PIAA state playoffs for the first time since 1990 with a 47-41 victory over West Chester Rustin. Isaiah Kennon added nine points for the Vanguards. Sun Valley will host Holy Ghost Prep Friday for fifth place. West Chester Rustin will travel to Great Valley on Friday with the winner heading to states.

In other 5A playback action, Jack Rittenmeyer made seven threes for all 21 of his points to lift Holy Ghost Prep over Great Valley, 44-33. The Firebirds clinched a spot in the state playoffs and will play Sun Valley on Friday. Great Valley will host West Chester Rustin on Friday.

Justin Anderson netted 16 points as Archbishop Carroll topped Mastery North, 67-61, in overtime, in a District 12 Class 5A play-in game.

Duane Satchell scored 18 points as Valley Forge Military Academy knocked off Pine Grove, 56-25, in the District 1-11 Class 3A semifinals. Arion Lewis added 11 points for the Trojans. Valley Forge will play in Saturday's final against Notre Dame Green Pond.

Girls' Basketball

Alana Cardona led all scorers with 15 points as Souderton defeated Garnet Valley, 47-30, in the District 1 Class 6A semifinals. Megan Walbrandt contributed 11 points for the Indians. Souderton will play in Saturday's title game against Central Bucks South at Temple University. The Jaguars will play Spring-Ford on Friday for third place.

Archbishop Carroll used a balanced attack of 11 scorers to cruise to a 60-21 victory over Palumbo in the District 12 Class 5A play-in game. Molly Masciantonio and Hope Syron had 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Patriots. Archbishop Carroll begins PIAA state tournament play on March 10.

Nicole Kaiser scored a game-high 23 points as Upper Dublin took down Central Bucks East, 55-34, in the District 1 Class 6A playbacks. Jackie Vargas added 10 points for the Cardinals. Upper Dublin is heading to states, and will play Perkiomen Friday for ninth place. The Patriots will travel to Downington East for the final spot in states.
