As a player: Pitched in the majors from 1960-67, the first five of those seasons with the Phillies. . .Was listed at 6-5, 210- pounds. . .Pitched in one game during the 1964 collapse, where he gave up five runs in relief of Jim Bunning who had given up seven. . .Pitched in 185 games, 139 in relief. Went 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA.
After playing days: Was everything from Phillies scouting director to Cubs team president. . .Managed the Phillies (1979-81), Yankees (1989) and Mets (1993-96). . .Guided the Phillies to the 1980 World Series title, ending a 97-year drought. . .Famously fleeced the Phillies of Ryne Sandberg when he was running the Cubs. Gave the Phillies Ivan DeJesus in exchange for Larry Bowa and Sandberg, a minor leaguer who went on to a Hall of Fame career with Chicago.
