Carlos Correa's wedding proposal made even Philly sports fans happy

A lot of people in this town, and many other towns, are cynical about public proposals at baseball games.

On Wednesday night, though, there was a proposal that even the most hard-hearted grouches might acknowledge was pretty cool.

Just a few minutes after helping the Houston Astros win the World Series, star shortstop Carlos Correa popped the question to his girlfriend, Daniella Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, a former Miss Texas pageant winner, told reporters at Dodger Stadium that she had no idea it was coming. Apparently, Correa had been urged to make the move by his mother, and he was plotting a proposal for several weeks. Even Correa's teammates were in on the scheme: Carlos Beltran, the Astros' 40-year-old slugger, helped the 23-year-old shortstop pick out the ring.

"All he ever talked about was winning the World Series, so I never really thought something like this would be on his mind, so when it all went down, I was just shocked," Rodriguez said. "I'm really good at finding stuff out. … I was literally in just the complete dark about this. Everyone knew but me."

Correa said he gambled and waited for a dramatic finale to the Astros' first championship year. The bet paid off in the biggest way possible.

Fans across the country watched it all unfold live on TV, as Fox's broadcast crew was in on the surprise.

In Philadelphia, there was — believe it or not — widespread joy. Yes, the city that still can't shake its reputation for being a cauldron of crankiness was happy for Correa and Rodriguez. Here's a look at how fans reacted on Twitter:
