Former Sixers assistant Jeff Capel II dies after battle with ALS

Capel worked under Doug Collins from 2011-13.

LOS ANGELES — Jeff Capel II, an assistant coach for the 76ers under Doug Collins, passed away Monday.

Mr. Capel, 64, was diagnosed with the incurable disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in March 2016. The progressive neurodegenerative disease affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Capel was an assistant with the Sixers from 2011-13. Before that, he was an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats from 2004-11.

Capel also had successful coaching stints on the college and high school levels. One of his sons, Jeff Capel III, is the associate head coach at Duke.  His other son, Jason, is a former head coach at Appalachian State.
